Both fighters wield the xiphos, a short straight Greek sword of the Mycenaean and classical periods. The blade is approximately twenty inches long, double-edged, leaf-shaped or straight depending on regional variation, designed primarily for thrusting but capable of slashing strikes. It was carried as a secondary weapon by hoplites and used as a primary weapon in close-quarters combat where the longer spear was no longer viable.

The xiphos exists in both fighters' historical contexts. Achilles's era (~1200 BCE) overlaps with the documented use of xiphos-class blades among Mycenaean and Aegean warriors. Spartacus's era (1st century BCE) places the xiphos within the broader Mediterranean tradition that informed Greek and Roman close-quarters weaponry. Neither fighter would find the xiphos unfamiliar, but neither would consider it his optimal weapon.

That is the point of the choice.

The decision to put both fighters on the xiphos is editorial, not technical. It strips weapon familiarity from the matchup and forces the contest into a domain where neither fighter has a built-in advantage from his primary training.

If Achilles fought with his spear, the matchup would be about Achilles's reach advantage and his documented spear technique against Spartacus's adaptation to an unfamiliar weapon. Achilles would dominate. The simulation would be a study in weapon mismatch rather than warrior comparison.

If Spartacus fought with his sica — the curved Thracian blade he was trained on at the gladiatorial school at Capua — the matchup would invert the same problem. Spartacus would have weapon familiarity; Achilles would not. Spartacus would dominate.

The xiphos sits between them. Both fighters know what a xiphos is. Neither fighter has trained on it as his primary weapon for most of his combat career. The matchup becomes a test of close-quarters skill, conditioning, psychological stability, and tactical adaptation, with the weapon as a neutral instrument rather than a decisive advantage.

Achilles's documented combat training, transmitted through the Homeric tradition and the cultural memory of Mycenaean warfare, emphasised the spear as the primary weapon of the heroic warrior. The Iliad describes him repeatedly using spears in battle. His secondary weapon for close engagements would have been a sword of the xiphos class, but the cultural and literary record places him at his most effective at spear-throwing range and slightly longer.

The xiphos is, for Achilles, the weapon of last resort. The fight has closed to a distance where his spear is no longer useful, his reach advantage has collapsed, and he is operating within the range his training and his mythology least documented. He is not unfamiliar with the xiphos. He is not optimised for it.

Spartacus's gladiatorial training at Capua was specifically on the sica, the curved short blade favored by Thracian gladiators. The sica and the xiphos share important attributes: both are short, both are designed for close-quarters work, both reward footwork and timing over reach and power. The xiphos's straight blade and double edge differ from the sica's curve, but a fighter trained on the sica adapts to the xiphos more readily than a fighter trained on the spear.

Spartacus's military experience in the Roman auxiliary forces would have included exposure to the gladius, the Roman short sword that is functionally similar to the xiphos in length and intended use. Between his gladiatorial training and his military background, Spartacus has the most directly transferable skill set for fighting with the xiphos.

The xiphos is, for Spartacus, an adjacent weapon. Not his primary, but within the family of weapons he has trained on and used in combat. His adaptation cost is small. His effectiveness with it is high.

The weapon choice is the first decision the matchup makes, and it carries significant weight. Spartacus enters the fight with smaller adaptation cost. Achilles enters with larger adaptation cost but retains his documented physical advantages in speed and explosive power.

This is one of the reasons the matchup is interesting. A fighter with overwhelming physical gifts is asked to operate in a domain where his physical gifts are partially neutralised by the choice of weapon and the close-quarters distance. A fighter with adapted skill and tactical experience is asked to overcome a physically superior opponent in a domain that rewards his strengths.

The xiphos is not the only equalising condition — climate, surface, light, and duration also matter — but it is the foundational one. The decision to put both fighters on the xiphos is what makes the matchup more than a study in physical advantage.

Within this fixed weapon framework, the user controls two variables:

• Location — Athens in August (Achilles's native environment) or Tromsø in February (Spartacus's chosen ground)
• Duration — 10 min, 15 min, or no time limit (first to five wounds terminates the fight)

The xiphos is a constant. What changes is the environment around the fight and the time the fighters have to resolve it.
