The Bolt vs Lewis, Achilles vs Spartacus, and Hamilton vs Senna matchups use the "TOOLS" label because their equalizing conditions are equipment. Basketball doesn't have a meaningful equipment variable. What changes between basketball eras is not the equipment but the rules.

The 1995–96 Bulls and the 2015–16 Cavaliers played under different rule environments. This matchup uses a specific hybrid rule set: some rules favor the Bulls' style, some favor the Cavs'. The hybrid produces a more balanced contest than either era's pure rule set would.

Defenders may use hands and forearms to impede perimeter players. This rule was eliminated in 2004; the modern game prohibits hand-checking and prioritizes freedom of movement for ball-handlers.

Effect: Helps the Bulls. Their physical perimeter defense (Pippen, Jordan, Harper) was calibrated for legal hand-checking. The Cavs' offensive structure, built around Irving's shot creation and LeBron's perimeter operations, is calibrated against modern rules. The adjustment cost falls on the Cavs.

Defenders may use zone schemes alongside man-to-man. This rule was added in 2001. The 1995–96 Bulls played under illegal-defense rules that effectively prohibited zones.

Effect: Helps the Cavs. They can deploy zones the Bulls' offense never faced. The triangle offense was designed for a man-to-man paradigm; a well-disguised zone disrupts its movement and spacing principles. The simulation rolls zone activation per Cavs defensive possession.

Defenders cannot remain in the painted area for more than three consecutive seconds without actively guarding an opposing player. Added in 2001 to prevent paint-camping.

Effect: Helps the Cavs. Rodman and other Bulls interior defenders could sit in the paint as deterrents under 1995–96 rules. The defensive three-second rule limits Rodman's camping, giving LeBron and Irving cleaner paths to the rim, modeled as a reduced help-defense weight on Bulls drive defense.

The modern arc distance, in effect since the 1997–98 season. The 1995–96 NBA used a uniform 22-foot line. The line was moved back specifically because the shorter distance had increased three-point volume beyond what the league wanted.

Effect: Slight disadvantage to the Bulls. Their shooters (Kerr at 51.5%, Kukoc, Pippen) were calibrated for the 22-foot line. Moving to 23′9″ reduces their effective accuracy. The Cavs were calibrated at the longer distance. Net: a modest Bulls shooter penalty applied only to their three-point attempts.

Neutral venue. Midtown Manhattan. Capacity ~19,800. Both Jordan and LeBron have documented elite performances at MSG: Jordan's 55-point game in 1995, LeBron's visiting-record 56 points in 2024. The crowd is mixed in terms of allegiance.

No home-court modifier for either team. The simulation runs as a pure head-to-head without venue advantage compressing or inflating the distribution.

Bulls home. Chicago's West Side, opened 1994. Capacity ~20,900.

The 1995–96 Bulls went 39–2 at home, a 95.1% home record, one of the highest in NBA history. The simulation calibrates the Bulls' home advantage above NBA average to match their documented dominance. This is the venue most likely to produce a Bulls win.

Cavs home. Downtown Cleveland. Capacity ~20,600. (Renamed Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse in 2019; the 2015–16 era name was Quicken Loans Arena.)

The 2015–16 Cavaliers were 30–11 at home, 73.2%, above NBA average. The simulation applies standard home-court advantage for the Cavs, calibrated below the Bulls' United Center modifier to reflect the asymmetry between each team's documented home records.

One variable:

• Venue: Madison Square Garden (neutral), United Center (Bulls home), or Quicken Loans Arena (Cavs home)

The rule set is locked: hand-checking allowed, zone defense legal, defensive three-second rule in effect, 23′9″ arc. The matchup asks how these two teams play under a rule set that spans both eras' relevant conditions, not which rules favor which team.
